  • ICT through curriculum integration has a significant and positive impact on student achievement, especially in terms of knowledge, comprehension, practical skill and presentation skill in subject areas.
  • ICT plays an important role in the way we communicate, learn and live.

CONCEPT OF ICT:

  • ICT is the use of hardware and software for efficient management of information.
  • It is used to transmit, store, create, share or exchange particular task.

DEFINITION:

  • ICT stand for Information and Communication Technology is defined as a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate and to create, disseminate, store and manage information.
  • ICT implies the technology which consists of electronic devices and associated human interactive materials that enable the user to employ them for a wide range of teaching-learning processes in addition to personal use.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF LEARNING ICT:

  • To implement the principle of life-long learning / education.
  • To increase variety of educational services and medium / method.
  • To promote equal opportunities to obtain education and information.
  • To promote technology literacy of all citizens especially for students.
  • To develop system of collecting and disseminating educational information.
  • To develop distance education with national contents.
  • To promote the culture of learning at school (development of learning skills, expansion of optional education, open source of education, etc).
  • To support schools in sharing experience and information with others.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ICT LEARNING:

  • EFFICIENCY: Faster, cheaper, fewer steps, less people, less paper work
  • EFFECTIVENESS: Most interactive, fewer errors, customized, personalized, archievable, transparent, searchable.
  • INNOVATION: New products, new technology.

LEARNING RESOURCES:

  • Traditional medium- Teacher centered, passive learning, print is the primary vehicle of learning and assessment, little or no freedom to the student.
  • ICT medium- Student centered, active learning, multiple forms of media and projects are used for learning assessments, great deal of freedom to the student.

NEED OF ICT:

  • ICT can be used as a tool for motivating students to learn in different way.
  • ICT can be effective and efficient.
  • ICT gives learners immediate access to richer source materials.
  • It can be dynamic and interactive.

ROLE OF ICT IN LEARNING:

  • It stimulates learner's interest and motivation in self-paced learning through various tools such as assignment, computer etc, as a result of this the teaching, learning process has become more productive and meaningful.
  • It promotes critical and creative thinking skills.
  • It increases teachers and learners efficiency
  • To develop and practice learners (learning, reading, listening and speaking).
  • To change the traditional way of teaching the implementing the use of multimedia technologies such as videos, images, animations and visual effects.

IMPORTANCE OF ICT IN EDUCATION:

  • ICT promotes higher order thinking skills.
  • ICT enhances subject learning.
  • ICT encourages collaborative learning.
  • ICT motivates learning.
  • ICT improves engagement and knowledge retention.

ATTRIBUTES OF ICT BASED LEARNING:

  • MULTI-SENSORY DELIVERY: Text, graphics, animation, sound and video
  • COOPERATIVE LEARNING: Enhanced learner's interest
  • ACTIVE LEARNING: Positive group/social interaction
  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS: One-One, One-Many, Many-Many
  • MULTI CULTURAL EDUCATION: Link students from across the country/around the world
  • MOTIVATION: Greater learner engagement (time).

ICT TOOLS:

DIGITAL TECHNIQUES:

  • WORD PROCESSING: Documents, notes, projects and assignments.
  • SPREAD SHEET PROGRAMMING: Records, exam scores.
  • DATA BASES: Used for information storage.
  • GRAPHING SOFTWARE: To prepare teaching-learning resources.
  • DEVELOPING MULTIMEDIA KITS: To make the process interesting.
  • USING INTERNET AND EMAIL FACILITIES: To gain knowledge.

  • ICT provides comfortable learning
  • ICT aids in the understanding of difficult concepts and processes.
  • ICT caters to different learning styles
  • ICT helps students to gain valuable computer skills
  • ICT aids in collaboration and group work.

APPROACHED IN THREE WAYS:

  • Learning about ICT: Teachers and students develop skills and knowledge in the potential uses of ICT to support learning.
  • Learning with ICT: Teachers and students use ICT resources to support the classroom curriculum.
  • Learning through ICT: Teachers and students use ICT to transform the process of  teaching and learning, learning in new ways.

ASSURE MODEL:

  • A- Analyze learner
  • S- State objectives
  • S- Select methods, media and materials
  • U- Utilize media and materials
  • R- Require learner participation
  • E- Evaluate and revise.

IMPACTS OF ICT IN EDUCATION:

  • ICT motivates students for self-paced learning
  • ICT improves teaching-learning process.
  • ICT reduces barriers of place and time
  • ICT releases time for more active, engaging and interactive forms of teaching
  • ICT bridges the digital divide between developed and under developed regions
  • ICT enhances communication interactions.

POSITIVE IMPACTS:

  • ICT keep on upgrading very fast and the number of employment opportunities are very high
  • People save paper as they read newspaper, magazine, books on a device rather than paper.
  • E-Commerce is getting popular because we save on many other costs of shopping and it is cheaper
  • Entertainment has become easy due to media processors like disk players, consoles etc.

  • ICT provides multimedia effect.

USES OF ICT:

  • Students use ICT as reference tool to look information, literature survey
  • Teachers use ICT for preparing teaching material, participate in online conferences.
  • Researchers use ICT as tool to collect, process and analyse data.
  • School administrators use ICT tools for administrative purposes.

CONCLUSION:

The rapid growth in ICT has brought remarkable changes in the twenty-first century in teaching-learning process. The effective integration of technology into classroom practices possess a challenge to teachers and learner. We think that if ICT is successfully integrated in Education then it enables wider learning opportunities into teaching-learning process. The above information indicate that teachers and learners have strong desire for the integration of ICT into education but they encountered many barriers to it.
